Beginner Youth
Beginner Youth lessons are for school-aged students ages 6 – 12. For beginning swimmers, water acclimation, movement and stamina are emphasized until they are ready for the introduction of swim strokes. Through this stage students increase their comfort with underwater exploration and introduce basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. As they continue, students will continue to focus on forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. The order of major milestones will be developing basic skills to propel and glide through the water with instructor help; eventually propelling and gliding without instructor help; and then moving toward deep water with arm/leg action, rhythmic breathing and swimming longer distances on front and back. Intermediate students begin with stroke support and development, progressing into stroke mechanics with YMCA swim lessons.

Diverse Abilities Swim Program
We believe that, in our diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive of all, including individuals with diverse abilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines an individual with a disability is a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. This is a low ratio swim lesson for individuals with diverse cognitive and/or physical ability. Parents/Guardians may accompany the child in the pool as they work with a YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor to develop skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision. Students will learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competence.
