YMCA 10k Training Team – Week 2

Building a Base

IMG_2646To those of you who did their first mile(s) with the training team or seasoned veterans, congratulations! Why? Because every mile, half mile and foot are a step in the right direction!

Many people ask me “how do you start running?”.  Ironically, I respond by letting them know they should start in the gym or in some fitness classes. It is very important to build a base before you ramp up your mileage or activity level. It can be a little hard to get used to your new fitness routine but once you start its hard to turn back. The YMCA and the 10k Training Team is perfect for making sure that you are ready to ‘Find Your Place’ on April 9 in all aspects: mentally and physically.

The YMCA is great because they have classes for all levels of fitness, they have the weights, machines and treadmills but also lots of supportive staff. Need to know how to use a machine? Not sure what kind of class to take? Have a new goal? You can ask anyone and they can point you in the right direction. And remember for those of you who have joined the 10k Team you have a punch card for 10 free visits to the YMCA of your choice, do not let it go to waste! 

As for me, I love going to Zumba for cardio; yoga for recovery and circuit and hit classes to build strength. However, you can’t do it all at once. Start at the base and build up, one step at a time.
