The YMCA invites you to join the community for the 9th Annual Step Up for Down Syndrome 5K and Family Festival! This family-friendly event takes place Saturday, October 10 at 8:30 a.m. at the Innsbrook Pavilion. The goal of the event is to raise awareness and acceptance of those with Down syndrome.
It holds a special place in the Y’s heart, especially since Matt Lomaka, a volunteer worker at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA, is participating. Matt, who has Down Syndrome, will not only be at the event but he’s also helping raise online funds through Matt’s Mates. “The walk raises money and awareness for people to know that all people with Down syndrome have full happy lives. The money goes toward camps, swimming and other fun stuff,” says Matt. “My goal is to raise $1,000 to $1,250.”
The event promises to be a lot of fun with special guest Lauren Potter who played Becky on the hit TV show Glee. There will also be live music by The Groove Motive, the 4th Annual GAP Fashion Show, Superstars Celebration and Sponsor/Exhibitor Displays. Matt will also be performing on his saxophone. He says he very excited and believes the event will be a big hit. He also has words of gratitude to his fans. “I just want to thank everyone for supporting me. It means a lot.”
