I come to you today with an update from your YMCA and how we are responding to this pandemic crisis. Following yesterday’s announcement from Governor Northam, you may know that we have suspended our branch operations through April 24 when we will assess reopening.
While our physical doors might be closed, we remain open to serving all in our community.
You play a critical role in our ability to meet the needs of our community – you are our backbone; without you, we cannot stand. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for being part of this Y community. We are grateful for your commitment to the YMCA and helping us be responsive to the need.
This is what “your YMCA” is doing right now to support the community:
1. We are providing daily childcare services for essential employees, allowing those who are keeping us healthy and safe to continue in their job knowing that their children are cared for in a safe environment.
2. We are helping you and your family stay “Healthy at Home” through virtual wellness classes, family resources and activities for spirit, mind and body.
3. We are connecting with our most vulnerable population, our senior members. We are personally calling all senior members to check on their well-being through phone calls and virtual programming to help ward off isolation.
4. We are identifying areas of need in our community. We will conduct blood drives at select YMCA sites, in partnership with the American Red Cross starting next week. Staff are serving meals with local partners, ensuring those with food insecurity have access to meals.
Having an impact at this time is made possible by those of you who have retained your membership, our generous donors, and a coalition of our philanthropic partners. Now, more than ever, we need you to STAY WITH US, in order to continue to provide needed services, support our full-time staff and ensure you can return to the YMCA you know and love as quickly as possible. Your membership dollars are crucial during this time.
I ask that you retain your YMCA membership and when you do, we will designate it as a charitable gift. Your help and support are critical. My friends, we need you now…right now, more than ever to help us keep serving all.
For members who can no longer afford to retain their membership, we ask you place your membership on hold rather than cancelling.
You will not be billed if you do this. A “hold” on your membership signals to us that you are still “with us” and that matters to us as well.
We are also asking individuals in our community who are not members to consider making a charitable gift to our Y Relief fund to help provide this critical work in the community.
We are working very hard to live into our legacy as an organization that steps up in times of need. We hope you will be with us. Your Y has been here to help the community through incredible issues for over 165 years and we are now to do the same. The Y and our community need us now more than ever—stay with us!
Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this appeal.
Please stay safe, keep us in prayer and we will look forward to seeing you again soon.
