Professor, Continuing Studies
Dr. Jamelle S. Wilson serves as the fifth dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) at the University of Richmond.
Prior to her appointment as dean, Wilson served as Superintendent of Schools for Hanover County, Virginia from 2011-2015. Before her appointment as superintendent, Wilson worked in Hanover County Public Schools as a classroom teacher, a lead teacher, an assistant principal, a principal and an assistant superintendent. In 2015, Wilson was named Region 1 Superintendent of the Year, having been selected for this honor by her colleagues in the region. In February 2017, Wilson was appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe to the Virginia Board of Education.
Her involvement with the University of Richmond’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies began through her work as member and chair of the governance board of Partners in the Arts, an entity which seeks to integrate arts education across PreK-12 education. Wilson is Professor in the School’s Educational Leadership and Policy Studies graduate program. In addition, she taught in an adjunct role for the University of Virginia and for Virginia Commonwealth University prior to serving as Dean.
As a career educator who recognizes the importance of effective leadership at all levels of an organization, Wilson holds a special interest in the area of developing and supporting building and division level leaders. To this end she studies school leadership and serves as an executive coach for new and early tenure building and school division leaders.
Wilson is active in service to the Richmond community and beyond, currently as a member of the Board of Governors of the International Baccalaureate Organization, the Board of Directors of Community Foundation of Richmond, the Board of Communities in Schools, the Leadership Council of Bridging Richmond, the Memorial Regional Medical Center Community Advisory Board, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She also has served as Chair of the Association Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Richmond. Other recent community service has included membership on the Curry School of Education Foundation Board.
Wilson earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English and a Master of Teaching (M.T.) from the University of Virginia, a Master of Arts (M.A.) in English with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a doctorate (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership and Policy with a concentration in Administration and Supervision, also from the University of Virginia.
Wilson and her husband of more than 25 years, James, reside in Hanover County with their two sons – Miles, a junior at the University of Richmond, and Grant, a tenth grader.
