At the YMCA, our program is fun as well as educational. The professionally trained staff helps children develop positive social skills through the YMCA’s Character Development Program. Every child is encouraged to practice the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. As with any YMCA program, the YMCA School Age Care Curriculum focuses on the YMCA mission of a healthy spirit, mind and body.

Full-Day

YMCA Member: $69 per week
Non-Member: 
$87 per week

  • A non-refundable registration fee of $25 is required per child per school year.
  • A fixed weekly payment will be drafted each Monday, one week prior to the start date.
  • A 30-day notice will be given if transportation routes need to be changed or cancelled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hours of the program?

The YMCA will offer drop-off beginning at 7 a.m. with pick-up at 6 p.m. for children entering kindergarten through 8th grade. The purpose of the program is to allow for children to be in a safe environment while learning in a virtual format. YMCA enrichment will be provided outside of virtual school hours.

How will registration be managed?

Registration will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis by the YMCA. The YMCA will work with school partners to assess expanding to additional schools depending upon the number of registrations. 

Children will need to be registered into the program by the Thursday prior to the week that they are wanting to attend.  This rolling registration system will ensure that proper staffing and hygiene needs are met.

Is Financial Assistance Available?

Financial Assistance is available and is based on a sliding scale according to household income. To request a Financial Assistance form, please contact ygradmin@ymcarichmond.org.

Who will manage the CDC-recommended guidelines?

The YMCA will adhere to CDC guidelines.  Upon arrival each day, children and staff will complete a health intake form and temperatures will be checked.  Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 and above will not be allowed to attend the program.  Staff and children will wear masks while inside buildings and social distancing will be enforced.  

Will kids be provided outside time?

The YMCA will ensure children move during brain breaks; each site has an approved field for safe outside activities.  During the afternoon, children will participate in enrichment activities that are led by a program specialist.    

How is lunch being handled? 

YMCA will provide daily afternoon snacks. Children are responsible for bringing their lunch each day. If a child qualifies for free/reduced lunch, they need to register and receive that lunch at their home school, and it can be brought with them to the program.

How long will the program last?

The program is set to be in place for as long as space is available and is dependent upon when schools re-open for the majority of in-person instruction.  

What happens when schools reopen?

The YMCA is committed to serving families. As schools open back up, we will offer before- and after-school programming at our YMCAs and schools across the community 

Is the YMCA teaching?

The YMCA is not a supplement for teaching, nor providing instruction. Students will be participating in online classes through virtual instruction. The YMCA provides monitors, but students will be actively engaged with their teacher through their laptop.

Can I drop in; I only need the service a few days a week?  

Registration is on a weekly basis for five-day instruction for programming.

What if I am already signed up through the YMCA?

A spot has already been reserved for you and you will be contacted regarding location and further details. Transportation will not be provided.

Our trained and certified staff work with our participants in large group settings (within licensing standards). YMCA staff builds relationships, fosters a sense of belonging and creates opportunities for our participants to achieve and learn through safe, engaging programs.

We consider the needs of each participant to promote success and provide a positive experience. Disclosure of special needs will not bar participation. Let us know when you register if your child is developmentally, emotionally, or physically challenged or requires another type of assistance.

All activities are open to all individuals who meet the following essential eligibility requirements by themselves, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

The YMCA Student Success Centers are operating emergency child care for school aged children of essential personnel which include children of school personnel as well as to children of working families through the Greater Richmond region. This program is exempt from licensure during this declared state of emergency due to COVID-19.

Participant Behavior Requirements

Children are expected to display appropriate behavior at all times. To assure the maximum enjoyment of the program by all participants, please review the following guidelines with your child.

Participants will:

  • Exhibit individual and group behavior that models our Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility and that doesn’t disrupt the flow of teaching and learning
  • Stay with the group
  • Be pleasant to others and refrain from using foul language
  • Refrain from putting themselves and others in danger
  • Use equipment, supplies and facilities as instructed
  • Have the ability to follow verbal and/or visual direction
  • Always wear shoes and clothes that conform with the Parent Handbook

Personal Needs

  • Is able to manage all personal hygiene

Motor Needs

  • Is able to ambulate on own or with a mechanical device in varied terrains, including sloped and uneven ground
  • Is able to perform gross motor functions and fine motor functions with reasonable guidance

Additional Requirements for Programs with Outdoor Activities

  • Is able to withstand exposure to the outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Is able to get in and out of a kayak and/or canoe
  • Is able to maintain a balanced, upright position when seated in a kayak, canoe, and/or bicycle
  • Is willing to wear all safety equipment correctly such as, but not limited to, protective helmets and life jacket

Other requirements may apply for unique features at some of our facilities, like challenge courses.


Health Precautions

Due to the unprecedented nature that this school year holds, we will be changing our usual safety precautions to correspond with recommendations from the CDC and Virginia Department of Health.

Are you screening for COVID-19?

  • Yes! Daily temperature checks and verbal COVID-19 screening will be conducted for children and staff upon arrival.

What are your cleaning/sanitizing procedures?

  • Children will wash hands prior to joining their class at the beginning of each day.
  • We will enforce increased handwashing and sanitizing throughout the day for children and staff.
  • Equipment and touch points will be wiped down on a continuous basis throughout the day with janitorial maintenance each day after close of the program.

What are you doing to promote social distancing?

  • Children will be in the same class during the day. Each “huddle” will be in a 1:13 staff to child ratio.
  • We will avoid large group gatherings.
  • There will be a separate entrance for staff from school personnel during program hours.
  • Children will arrive via vehicle drop-off lines to avoid large groups entering and leaving at the same time.
  • Masks will be worn by all children and staff at all times while indoors. (Masks are not required for outdoor activities.)
  • Large spaces such as auditoriums, cafeterias and gymnasiums will be used to ensure proper social distancing.
  • Each program site will have limited capacity to help ensure social distancing.
