Week 9: August 12 - 16

The rain has not slowed us down, as we continue to have fun here at Camp Tuckahoe. Being week 9 and having one more week of Summer Camp to enjoy. It might be the last week of Camp, but we are still ready to blast off into new adventures. Get ready for The Final Frontier as we explore space.

Campers at a week of carnival-themed camp

Program Highlight 

Campers got to enjoy the Carnival at Tuckahoe this week. We had some bounce houses and fun games on Thursday afternoon and evening for our final Family Night. On Friday, we continued the carnival fun by making ice cream in a bag. Campers are really enjoying their final weeks here at camp Tuckahoe.

LIT Highlight

LITs were given props from which they must determine how to get themselves out of various scenarios. Examples: How would you get yourself off a desert island, how would you defeat Godzilla? They must demonstrate the use of the items.

Field Trips were… Tuesday to the State Capitol Tour, Thursday was skating at Ashland Skateland, and Friday was enjoyed at Pocahontas State Park Pool/Waterpark.

“COW” (Counselor of the Week)

Our week 8 COW was Miss. Sally. Miss Sally shows amazing enthusiasm as she leads her camper through camp. Way to go Miss Sally!

Week 8: August 5 - 9

Campers are showing their fun, energetic self’s as they play Ga-Ga ball, do Archery, explore Nature, and show their creative sides at MAD. Sports has also been a good time as Mr. Yanni demonstrates 3 different sports this week. The rain did not slow us down this week either. We continued to have the fun inside.

Program Highlight 

It was a colorful week, with our Fun Friday Color Wars. We tie-dyed, had a color powder splash, and some squirtle fun where we splashed colorful water through camp. We also had campers move up as they achieved their ranks.

LIT Highlight

The LIT’s went to Jumpology on Tuesday, Belle Isle and Brown’s Island on Thursday, and the Science Museum on Friday. During their Leadership Training time, they did a Minefield Activity where they had to work together as a team to move through “the mines”.

Our week 6 COW was Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter is such a fun counselor to be with. He does a great job keeping the campers safe.

We all worked hard on improving our ninja skills during Tuckahoe Ninja Warrior. Campers continue to improve on their archery and swimming skills, which definitely help them  during their ninja training week.

Program Highlight

This week the campers worked on becoming the best ninja across the Y. They worked on their skills all throughout camp and got to show them off on Friday during the ultimate ninja course. We also had some special visitors for Huddle 4 and 6 this week. They got to meet and learn all about therapy dogs. They all loved getting to see the cute and helpful dogs!

LIT Highlight

The LIT’shad the opportunity to go to coder’s camp through the Geek squad this week. They were able to learn all about coding and even got to show off their new skills. The LIT’s also went bowling for another fun field trip this week.

Our week 5 COW was Mrs. Sarah. Sarah is always willing to lend a helping hand and can be counted on whenever we need her. She has even stepped up to be the MAD specialist when ours took a break!

Week 6: July 22 - 26

Campers had a blast during Splish-Splash week here at Camp Tuckahoe. Campers enjoyed a slip and slide on Fun Friday and cooled off with water balloons during the week. The counselors even joined in the fun with a friendly water gun battle during the week.

Campers prepare for time on the rock climbing wall

Program Highlight 

This week we were surrounded by water and more water. We spent some time inside earlier in the week due to the rain, but by the end of the week we really enjoyed the cool weather. Campers did many activities involving water, like making boats at Nature to send down our slip and slide on Friday. Campers also were able to make airdry clay during MAD. We all enjoyed a friendly water gun fight that was happening between the counselors all week long. They even got Mrs. Stacie!

LIT Highlight

The LIT’s got to enjoy The Lion King on Tuesday since their putt-putt got cancelled due to the rain. Later in the week they were able to participate in a craft day as well as go on a canal boat ride!

Our week 5 COW was Mr. Farai. He does such a great job with Huddle 2 and can always be counted on to lend a helping hand when it is needed.

Camp Tuckahoe has amazing talent, that they got to show off during our Family Night on Thursday, and Fun Friday! The hot heat did not slow us down. We moved Mr. Yanni, our Sports Specialist into the family gym, along with our other Specialist that were located around the building to escape from the heat.

Program Highlight 

This week we had the heat, so we moved our camp programs inside for the afternoons. The rock wall was enjoyed by many campers, along with our studio rooms where they played indoor games and worked on their talent show skills.

LIT Highlight

The LIT’s group challenge this week was about Diversity and Inclusion. Our LIT’s participated in a Privilege Walk game and did such a great job with the activity. Tuesday’s field trip was a photo scavenger hunt at the VA Museum of Fine Arts. Thursday field trip was a ball of a good time as they bowled, and Friday they helped with a Community Service Project.

CILT Highlight

Our CILT’s got to get belay certified this week, and help lead Huddles around camp.

“COW” (Counselor of the Week)

All are staff are doing such a great job, picking just one COW is so hard to do. Week 4’s Amazing COW’s were Miss Joanna & Mr. Shawn. Miss Joanna is the LIT counselor who connects so well with the campers in her huddle. She is such a great leader and helps keep our LIT’s safe on our field trips. Mr. Shawn is the counselor of our Huddle 6. We love his energy and leadership he brings to camp.

Howdy Friends! What a great week with herding sheep, having “snakes” in our boots, and lassoing adventure during our Wild, Wild, West week. Water balloons were a refreshing fun time during the warm afternoons as well.

Program Highlight 

Pool time has been moving swimmingly. Our Campers are leveling up during their lessons, and Counselors are loving the pool time they get on Free Swim Friday with their huddles. Some of our campers are starting to work on the 3rd and 4th ranks in their favorite specialist areas.

LIT Highlight

Our LIT Field trips were Browns Island on Tuesday which was a great adventure, Laser Tag on Thursday, and a College tour of Randolph Macon College on Friday. During Leadership Training, they worked on Outcome-focused lessons, and engaging, activity based and impact fun!

“COW” (Counselor of the Week)

Miss Allison and Miss Ashley were our COW’s for week 3. Miss Allison, the Huddle 5 counselor has shown her camp spirit since counselor camp training started back in May, and has continued to show her camp spirit through the weeks. She shows amazing leadership, and steps up for whatever job that is needed to be done. Miss Ashley, the Huddle 1’s sweet heart does so well with our rising Kindergarteners. She is a pleasure when helps with Ride-In.

Next week’s theme is Tuckahoe’s Got Talent! Singing, Dancing, and Drama-ing is Encouraged!

Message from the Director

We got spirit, yes, we do! We got spirit here at Camp Tuckahoe too! The Campers are up and moving, showing that spirit as we move to our specialist areas. Coolers are being filled throughout the day, as our campers are drinking their water and staying hydrated in this wonderful heat.  Our Family Night Cook-Out last Thursday was so yummy. Hotdogs and nice cold watermelon started our family night off so well, while we visited our specialist areas with our families. Camp Tuckahoe’s next Family Night will be July 18, 6:30 – 8 p.m. We hope to see you there!

Program Highlight 

Ranks are moving along. Campers are starting to move up in their Ranks in the different Specialty areas: Nature, Sports, Archery, and MAD (Music, Art, Drama). We had our first heat day, Wednesday. Campers got to move around the YMCA in the cool air enjoying activities like the Rock Wall. Fun Friday’s games were a blast as well. Campers accomplished challenges through camp.

LIT Highlight

Our LIT group focused on communication by playing different games and learning the difference between verbal and nonverbal ways of communication. Tuesdays field trip was a jumping good time at Jumpology, a trampoline park and on Thursday there was no Camp – Happy 4th of July. Friday’s field trip was enjoyed inside due to the heat, and holiday. They had a movie day with popcorn and snacks in the clubhouse.

The awesome Mr. Q was our COW for week 2.  Mr. Q does an amazing job being a counselor to his Huddle 6 Campers. He shows his energy and enthusiasm when getting campers on their feet during Opening and Closing Counsel. Mr. Q has gotten many shout outs from different YMCA Directors. We are blessed to have Mr. Q on our team! He is doing a SUPER GREAT job!

Week 2: June 24 - 28

What a “ooey-goey” week here at Camp Tuckahoe.  We are having so much fun! Camp is growing, and so we had to add one more huddle to our camp family. Huddle 6, the Explorers will be our oldest campers in our K – 5 camp. This helps us meet more new friends, and our friendships we have made are getting stronger.

Campers show off their ooey-gooey mess they made

Program Highlight 

Campers can start ranking up for the Soccer Rank, as they worked on their Soccer skills at Sports this week. Nature had a “hot” ooey goey mess as campers worked together to make volcanoes, and at MAD (Music, Art, Drama) worked on different skits and paintings. Campers also got to make some lava bottles, design their own popsicles, and some Campers were able to hit the bullseye at Archery.

LIT Highlight

LITs worked on their leadership skill as they were grouped together to come up with a song, and a chant to teach our other huddles. They did a great job working as a team, and had wonderful songs to show off. Tuesdays field trip they got to see the Toy Story 4 Movie at Movieland, and Thursday they had a beautiful day walking around Maymont Park seeing different kinds of animals. Friday’s field trip was to Patterson Golf Park.

“COW” (Counselor of the Week)

Week 1 COW is shared between Mr. Darius, and Mr. TJ! Mr. Darius, our Huddle 1- Trailblazer East Counselor made sure to help his younger campers feel comfortable at the pool by dipping his feet in the water right beside them. He also stepped up many times to help fill in for different jobs around camp. He’s one COOL DADDY! Mr. TJ, our LIT counselor was also recognized by all our specialist for helping and setting a great example when participating and encouraging campers to try each activity. He has been a great part of our LIT team, leading our LIT campers. What an AWESOME job he is doing! Way to step up and start the summer off by being Super Great Guys!

Aloha Camp Families! With our theme being Aloha Luau, it has been an AWESOME first week here at Camp Tuckahoe. It has been such a pleasure meeting you all. Thank you so much for being a part of our camp team and helping us start the summer off so well. Your communication and hard work getting your documents in has been very much appreciated. We all had a great time getting to see old friends again and making new friends in the process. Swim lessons made a big splash and we ended our week strong with our Fun Friday activity and dress up day! Campers all participated in an exciting game of Treasure Hunt and dressing up in their Aloha Luau, summer fun attire.

Program Highlight 

Campers started working on ranks this week in the different activities. Activities include Archery, Sports-Basketball, Nature and MAD (Music, Art, Drama). If a camper can demonstrate their skills in a rank they will achieve rank 1! Many of our campers are on their way to earning their red star rank for achieving rank 1 in 5 activities. 

LIT Highlight

LITs “Break the Ice” by getting to know one another and established a group culture. Tuesdays field trip to Sunset Lanes was a “ball”, along with Thursdays field trip to VMFA. Wednesday, they dug into the topics of the week… engaging, activity based, and impactful fun. It was great to see them engaged throughout camp.
