During week 10, natural wonders, we are going to use our beautiful campus to our full advantage. Campers are going to lean how to put a tent together, learn about camouflage and take a nature hike.

Reminders:

  • Be sure to apply sunscreen to your camper in their bathing suit before sending them to camp!
  • It’s also important to send your peanut and tree nut free lunch and a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Last week, Layla won Camper of the Week!  Her counselor, Ms. Melissa says that, “Layla truly represents our four core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility every single day! She has been a leader among her peers and has made our whole group so fun to be a part of!” We’re so proud of you Layla!

Last week, we recognized three incredible staff members, Mr. Welton, Ms. Kimmy, and Mr. Aaron! Kimmy and Aaron work with our L.I.T. unit for campers in grades six through eight, while Welton serves in our Explorer unit for campers in grades three through five! Each of these staff members go above and beyond for our campers and we are so lucky to have them. Way to go y’all!

Program Highlights

For Natural Wonders campers have the opportunity to dress up in camouflage for Wacky Wednesday! We also have the unique opportunity at CTB to explore the natural world around us both in camp and out in Pocahontas State Park! Units will participate in activities throughout these natural wonders and learn more about the plants and animals that inhabit this area!

It’s beginning to look at lot more FESTIVE this week for holiday hoopla! Although winter holidays have a special place in my heart, this week is designed to celebrate everyone’s favorite holiday of the year! I can’t wait to see how everyone dresses up for Wacky Wednesday. Have a magical week!

Last week, we recognized three incredible staff members, Ms. Maya, Ms. Abbey, and Ms. Nish! Abbey and Nish work with our Every Buddy unit for campers with diverse abilities, while Maya serves in our LIT unit! Each of these staff members go above and beyond for our campers and we are so lucky to have them. Way to go ladies!

Program Highlights

For Holiday Hoopla, campers had the opportunity to dress up as any holiday they liked! We saw a HUGE variety of holidays represented and campers have had a blast playing holiday themed games throughout camp this week.

  • Highlights: Campers will have an enhanced opportunity to explore the natural world around them! Plant and wild life conservation will be at the forefront of our programming to help campers develop a deeper understand of the areas around them.
  • Field Trips: L.I.T. campers will be traveling to Iron Bridge Sports Park on either Tuesday or Thursday from 12:30 – 3:30pm!

Howdy ya’ll! This week, the accents have been thick and the costumes have been amazing! As we go down yonder to explore the wonders of camp life, our camper’s have truly embodied the values that the Y exhibits. Stay tuned for more updates and pictures on Facebook, as we continue the journey this week!

“COW” (Camper & Counselor of the Week)

Last week, Wyatt got to rock his camper of the week smile! He received camper of the week because he always comes to camp showing off the core values and his amazing camp spirit! Way to go Wyatt!

Last week, we recognized Ms. Amanda as one of the counselors of the week! Ms. Amanda is in her second summer as an EveryBuddy counselor! Ms. Amanda goes above and beyond with her boys everyday to make sure they have a great day! Congratulations Ms. Amanda!

Program Highlights

This week campers who climb the Alpine tower will notice that the alpine bell is back on the top of the tower!  For those who make it to the top, they get to ring the new bell.  So many climbers have been reaching new heights “three more moves” at a time and their accomplishments have been literally ringing across camp!  On the ground, campers have been honing their skills on the archery range by trying out different targets.  A pear may be much harder to hit, but also much more fun!  What about popping a balloon with an arrow?

Camper Rank Highlights

Ranks are designed to engage campers in activities that they choose learn.  This gives campers a chance to pick activities that they will really be excited to hone their skills in.  After completing ranks, campers receive a bead to signify that they have passed that level.  Ask your camper how they earned each bead on their necklace today! 

Information for NEXT Week:

Week 9 is Holiday Hoopla! Groups will work on their holiday float in huddle time throughout the week. On Friday, they will then show off their creation during their unit parade.  Wednesday, dress up to celebrate your favorite holiday.

Color Wars is a tradition like no other here at CTB and it gets bigger and better every year! Tie-dying at arts and crafts is always a hit and we end the week with the biggest unit day of the summer. Get ready to get messy!

  • It’s also important to send your peanut and tree nut free lunch and a water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • LIT Campers need to wear your LIT camp shirt on field trip days!

  • Don’t forget about COLOR WARS unit day this Friday! Campers should wear a white shirt and shorts/shoes that can get messy. Be prepared to put a messy camper in your vehicle during afternoon pick up.

Camper Rank Highlights

Campers are working hard to build their skills during choice programming and are quickly achieving higher ranks!  Campers at music, dance, and drama who have achieved a higher rank will have the opportunity to create their own plays and assist lower ranks in ranking up!  At boating, campers will work on learning parts of the boat and paddle, in addition to more complex steering techniques. Look for rank beads on your camper’s necklace to see how much they achieved this week!

Last week, Lauren Grlica was awarded Camper AND Swimmer of the Week! Her counselor, Lauren says that, “Lauren is such a joy to be around! She is kind, compassionate, and always gives her best. She’s an excellent role model for her peers.” We’re so proud of you Lauren!

Last week, we recognized three incredible staff members, Ms. Alexis, Ms. Julia, and Ms. Shadai! Alexis and Julia work with our Explorer Unit, where Alexis serves as our head counselor. Shadai works with our L.I.T. unit as their head counselor. Each of these staff members go above and beyond for our campers and we are so lucky to have them. Way to go ladies

Campers are strutting their stuff in their unit colors this week as we celebrate color wars! Everyone will tie-dye at arts and crafts and have a blast at our messy and much anticipated color wars unit day on Friday!

We have had a fantastic week! The heat can’t stop us from enjoying the great and wonderful activities at Thunderbird.  Water is so very important to life, and we have had a full week dedicated to it.  We are looking forward to cardboard box boat races at the end of the week.  As we pass the midway point of the summer, we are so excited for campers to continue to experience new achievements, relationships and belonging at Camp Thunderbird.

Last week, Colin George was awarded Camper of the Week for the EveryBuddy unit! His counselor, Ms. Amanda said that, “He participated in every activity and was a great example for other campers!” We’re so proud of you Colin!

Last week, we recognized two of our incredible staff members for their outstanding work this summer! Mr. Jonathan is one of our EveryBuddy counselors! He leads campers with diverse and unique abilities throughout camp and ensures they have a blast!

Program Highlights

Even though it’s been a hot week, Explorers and LIT’s have been enjoying some climbing time on the shaded bouldering wall.  They can practice their climbing skills a little closer to the ground so they are ready to scale the alpine tower!  Discovery has been testing out different baits to see which type is the best for catching fish.  Corn?  Hot dogs?  Just a fishing net?  Research will continue throughout the summer!

We hope you and your camper feel at home with us this week! Animation plays a huge impact in our culture through TV, film, and literature and I know it will be a huge hit at camp. Today was by far our biggest dress up day of the year and we loved seeing everyone’s costumes!

Low Ropes & Adventure Challenge Elements are camper favorites here at CTB! Our 50-foot alpine climbing tower offers a multitude of challenges to campers looking to test their limits! Our dual zipline takes campers for a ride across Lake George while allowing them to “race” their friends. Our brand new low ropes course allows campers to work through various elements while improving communication and team building skills!

Explorer and LIT campers can choose which activity they would like to rank up in through our five tracks: Shooting Sports (Archery & Marksmanship), Creative Arts (Arts and Crafts & Music, Dance, and Drama), and Sports (Field Sports & Boating). We already have campers ranking up and moving on to more challenging ranks. Our specialists keep track of each campers’ individual progress and award special beads for their bead necklace so be sure to ask your camper about any special achievements when they get home on Tuesday and Wednesday!

Last week, Colton Flick was awarded Camper of the Week for group two! His counselor, Ms. Melissa said that, “He is such a good friend to others in our group and leads by example. He demonstrates the core values every day!”

Last week, we recognized two of our incredible staff members for their outstanding work this summer! Mr. Barnes is our Mountain Biking specialist! He teaches our LIT campers about bike safety and takes them into Pocahontas State Park for a true trail riding experience. Ms. Melissa is one of our Discovery Unit counselors and this is her second summer at CTB! Melissa helps take care of her campers and lead them through all the different activities throughout the day.

Last week Taylor Stearns was recognized as one of our Campers of the Week! Her counselor, Ms. Jacqueline, wanted to recognize Taylor because of how she demonstrated the four core values of the Y throughout the week. Way to go Taylor!

Last week, we awarded two outstanding staff members with Counselor of the Week! Caroline works with our EveryBuddy program for campers with diverse abilities. She constantly goes above and beyond to ensure her campers are included and having a blast! Katie works with campers as a specialist at our Low Ropes activity area! She does an outstanding job encouraging campers to work together through teambuilding activities. CTB wouldn’t be the same without these amazing individuals!

Program Highlights

Our LIT campers love learning new skills with Mr. Barnes at Mountain Biking! This is Barnes first summer at YMCA Camp Thunderbird and he’s already rolling through trails and teaching campers all about bike safety! Our campers have the unique opportunity to travel into Pocahontas State Park to experience the various trails they have to offer.

Camp times truly are the best of times. Friendships are formed, traditions are carried on, and memories are made! Week 2 has been A-W-E-S-O-M-E and action-packed. We loved seeing everyone in their favorite sports attire for Wacky Wednesday this morning!

Program Highlights

The Bearded Boating Boys are back in action on Lake Geroge this summer at CTB!  Mason, Matthew, and Jesse have been busy making a splash with campers at boating and on our aqua zip line.  From teaching the basics of how to paddle and steer to ensuring camper safety on the water, these boys are truly making an impact in the lives of our campers!

Last week one LIT camper won TWO C.O.W. awards! Joshua Burks was awarded Camper of the Week for his group and he was recognized as Swimmer of the Week by our pool staff! Way to go Josh!

Last week, we awarded three outstanding staff members with Counselor of the Week!  Bailey works with our Discovery Unit, Zoey works with our LIT Unit, and Josh is one of our office staff members. CTB wouldn’t be the same without these amazing individuals!

Program Highlights

Our brand new aqua zipline is making a big splash this week with our first ever participants! Campers of all ages are loving the plunge into Lake George and can’t wait to do it again.

New to camp this summer is our Archery Specialist, Mr. Angel! He has been busy making a big impact on campers so far. From teaching the basics of how to shoot to helping campers hit their first bullseye, he is truly making an impact in the lives of our campers!
