Camp Connections – Camp Thunderbird

Camp Connections

Week 6: July 23 - 27

Campers gather around a creek bed to look at nature

From the Camp Director

(Sigh) Color Wars week lived up to its expectations for the campers and staff.  It continues to be one of the most fun weeks of camp.  This week we have kayak races, musical chairs competitions, team games, relays, and more to show off their team pride.  We have gotten through the half way point in the summer, but our staff are taking on the challenge to make these next few weeks even better than Week #1. We hope that your camper has found their energy and ENTHUSIASM this summer with us!

Remember, we are still open for registration for Final Four Week.  Reserve your spot today (activities are modified this week).

Reminders:

Campers prepare for color wars

Program Highlight

This week we are highlighting our theme Color Wars! On Monday the groups received a color to represent our four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Every day during opening and closing counselor, as well as lunch they groups played games against each other to earn points! The games consist of musical chairs, tug-a-war, kayak race, frozen t-shirt and many more fun and excited games. The winner will be announced Friday morning before the actual color wars, which we are all very excited about!

LIT Hightlight

Color Wars has been a fabulous week for the LIT’s.  Our campers got creative and colorful with lots of color themed competitions.  On Thursday, we beat the heat (and the rain!) with a field trip to IceZone for two hours of ice skating.  Friday ended our week with our traditional color war and a second round of group pictures; this time in technicolor!

Campers prepare for a canoe ride

Camper Ranks

Boating is a great time to practice that “J” stroke.  Counselors and lifeguards teach campers to propel the canoe or kayak through the water using the proper technique and strokes.  We are excited to introduce our ranks ribbons next week during choice programming.  When your camper earns a rank, they will receive a ribbon from the specialist.  At the end of the day, they will be able to tie their ribbon on a rope that goes across the closing council stage.

Next week is our biggest week yet! COLOR WARS!

Camper gets ready for the zip line

From the Camp Director

Here at camp, we love to embrace all of our wacky-ness and wonderful-ness! As an inclusive camp, we realize that all of our campers come from different backgrounds and lifestyles.  In all of our differences the main commonality is that we all just want to have fun! That is our goal, and we believe that we do just that! By making friends, following Y values, and learning new skills, campers continue to tell us all that they have accomplished throughout their week. However wacky we all are, we want to express how wonderful your camper is! Thank you again for choosing Camp Thunderbird to be your camper’s day camp experience.

Have a great weekend!

Program Highlight

This week we are highlighting boating! Boating allows campers to see camp at a different angle from our beautiful lake, Lake George. On their boating adventure, campers see fish, turtles, a blue heron, and if they are lucky, the hippogator. Boating teaches campers safety around the water, how to maneuver a canoe or kayak, and the parts of the boat.

LIT Hightlight

LIT’s have been zipping through this week! We got a chance to attend a special LIT only movie day and spend lots of time with our huddle groups preparing for the Talent. Some of our camp groups even got to explore Pocahontas State park on our mountain bikes.

Camper Ranks

Choice programming continues to be such a huge hit.  Campers continue to gain new ranks in all our activity areas.  To rank up in a specific skill, campers show their specialist what they learned in order for them to be checked off as complete. For nature this week, Ms. Grace has seen campers learn the plant growth process and about respecting the environment around us.  This week, she even incorporated microscopes and slides for wildlife observation!

This week, we have explored the superhero within.  On Wednesday, camper’s dressed up as superhero’s and paraded their camp spirit during opening council.  Superheroes have courage, and so do our campers! We’ve seen campers do activities for the first time, and achieve new skills each day.  Superheroes also show that they care for others.  Our campers have also exhibited values and earned beads for their character bead necklaces.  This week has been so much fun, and we still have the whole summer ahead of us!

LIT Hightlight

Hey there parents! This week, our LITs have jumped right in to life at camp! Starting each day with their own opening council across the lake, LITs are already showing their leadership skills by leading songs and group expectations for their unit. On Tuesday afternoon, they got to put their skills to work as we kicked off our first week of choice programming this summer. Our LITs had the opportunity to sign up for two activities of their choice and dig a little deeper in those program areas as they work towards earning their first ranks of the summer. We look forward to our trip to Ashland Skateland on Thursday, and can’t wait to find out which of our amazing campers will receive the coveted Camper Of the Week award!
