Week 10 is finally here! It’s hard to believe that this summer at Camp Shady Grove is already over. We hope you’ve had a special and memorable summer here with us, but the fun doesn’t have to end now. If you’re looking for after-school care, you can register for our school-age childcare program! We offer homework help, physical activity, snack, leadership development, STEM activities, and MORE! Register online or contact Director Michael Wertz for more info. We sincerely hope you’ll join us during the school year! From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for all of your support. We have fully enjoyed your summer with your campers, and we have loved seeing your children grow!

Program Highlight

For the final Camp Connection, we would like to highlight Huddle 1 camper Jack. Every single Wacky Wednesday, Jack came fully and enthusiastically fully dressed for the weekly theme. We saw Jack as The Cat in the Hat, Bumblebee, an astronaut, and many many more characters. Thank you for being so A-W-E-S-O-M-E and dedicated to camp!

LIT Highlight

This Tuesday, the LITs went to Ashland Skateland to enjoy the last LIT field trip of the summer. They met up with LITs from Manchester, Goochland, Northside, and Downtown. Remember that LITs are rising grades 6-8, so you might have a camper who can join us next year!

“COW” (Counselor of the Week)

For Week 9, Mr. Christopher, our archery specialist, earned the honor of Counselor of the Week (COW)! Thank you to Mr. Christopher for his dedication to camp and his commitment to keeping archery exciting and new each week. Our Camper of the Week for Camp Shady Grove was Rohan Rajguru. Rohan’s bright and positive attitude was a joy to all around him at camp, and we appreciate him!

Camp is almost complete here at Camp Shady Grove, and what a summer it has been! With only a week and a half left, we hope to finish out the summer strong. Don’t forget that your camper still has the opportunity to earn more beads, maybe even a gold spirit bead, a Camper of the Week bead, or a Director bead, given out to 2 deserving campers who best exemplify what camp is all about. We love to showcase campers and their achievements, and are very proud of what they have accomplished so far this summer – we hope you are too!

Program Highlight

Over the past few weeks, including this week, our art specialist, Alana, has been doing tie dye with the campers. Campers have the chance to tie dye socks and coffee filters. She has been exploring colors lately with creative ideas that the kids love!

LIT Highlight

This Tuesday, LITs are going to the Goochland Family YMCA to use their outdoor pool for the day and socialize with others. LITs meet up with other LITs from the Greater Richmond YMCAs and get to mingle with new campers and make friends!

For Week 8, Ms. Michelle, our Huddle 10 counselor, earned the honor of Counselor of the Week (COW)! We would like to thank Ms. Michelle for all of her hard work!  Our camp-wide camper of the week for Week 8 is Samantha Burgess, of Huddle 5. Congrats, Samantha-we appreciate your ENTHUSIASM and how well you demonstrate the 4-core values.

Week 8: August 6 - 10

Week 8 of Camp Shady Grove is well under way, and we can’t believe that the summer is almost over! For our final family night, please join us this Thursday at 6:30 pm for a night of family fun in the (setting) sun. To fit with our Wet and Wild theme, we will have a big game of Slip N’ Slide kickball. Come ready to get wet!

Even though there are only 2 and a half weeks left of Camp Shady Grove, the camp fun doesn’t have to end! We invite you to join the “Final Four” camp at Camp Thunderbird for August 27 – 30 (Monday – Thursday). There is also bus transportation available from the Shady Grove Family YMCA to Camp Thunderbird.

Program Highlight

This Wednesday, all of the campers will have a water day after swim time! There will be slip and slide, water balloons, sprinklers, and more. Campers will be playing games and socializing with their friends while cooling off on a hot day with water games!

LIT Highlight

This Thursday from 10 am – 2 pm, LITs are going to Iron Bridge Sports Park. LITs meet up with other LITs from the Greater Richmond YMCAs and get to mingle with new campers and make friends! Each LIT will have the opportunity to partake in Laser Tag, Batting Cages, Mini Putt and Go Karts.

Week 7: July 30 - August 3

Welcome to Week 7 at Camp Shady Grove. Our theme this week is Solar Sensation, and we’re exploring everything having to do with science and outer space. Our specialists have lots of fun activities planned for this week, like in archery, where Mr. Chris is leading a contest with the LITs, ending with a special award at the end of the summer. In Arts & Crafts, Miss Alana is making moon rocks with us and encouraging us to stretch our creativity. With Mr. Andrew in Music & Drama, each huddle is learning and rehearsing a classic storybook play, and everyone will perform it on Friday during their Music & Drama time! We can’t wait to see how talented our campers are. And just remember, each specialty area has their own bead, and our specialists have loved giving out these special beads to our campers!

Program Highlight

This Wednesday, our camp will get a visit from Science Tellers, a group that provides interactive and education programs to engage children of all ages. Their 2018 program, “Mystery of the Golden Piano” is wild west-themed, and will use audience participation and scientific problem solving to help the story come alive. We are very excited to bring this group to Camp Shady Grove!

LIT Highlight

This Tuesday, our LITs went to Maymont Park, along with all of the other LITs from all of the camps in the Greater Richmond Area. While it may have been muggy outside, our LITs still had a great time exploring the park and enjoying connecting and meeting other LITs.

“COW” (Counselor of the Week)

For Week 6, our Counselor of the Week (COW) was Miss Sydney! Miss Sydney gets to work with our younger Huddles throughout the week, leading different Huddles on different days. Miss Sydney shines due to her caring personality, and the meaningful bonds she forms with our little ones! Our camp-wide camper of the week for Week 6, was Olivia McNerny. Congratulations – you truly make camp a wonderful place due to your positive attitude!

The rain hasn’t been slowing us down here at camp Shady Grove this week! Our campers have been keeping the energy up and showing us their ENTUSIASM! We have been giving out tons and tons of beads this week, and we couldn’t be happier about it! Whether it’s for caring, respect, responsibility, honesty, courage, teamwork, spirit, archery, or one of our many other achievement beads – ask your camper to show off your beads to them! You’ll be impressed with how A-W-E-S-O-M-E your campers are!

Program Highlight

In archery, campers are learning the importance of archery and character development while having fun. Campers try to pop balloons for archery beads and they also try to solve riddles to move on to the next destination in archery. Mr. Owen, one of our counselors and archery teachers, says his favorite thing about archery is “Watching campers confidence skyrocket as they learn new archery techniques reassures, that even the smallest things can provide people with life-lasting stories and experiences.”

This Tuesday, LITs are going to Ice Zone to go ice skating with fellow LITs. LITs meet up with other LITs from the Greater Richmond YMCAs and get to mingle with new campers and make friends! It was a nice chance to cool off and get out of the July heat.

Week 5: July 16 - 20

Summer is halfway over, but we can’t wait to experience even more fun with our campers for the rest of the summer. Look out for our Camp Talent Show that’s happening THIS Thursday at 6:30 pm. We will be starting with some delicious ice cream, and then kicking off the talent portion with each huddle, and even our staff participating! Meet us at the pavilion to join us for this fun, free event. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors to show off how talented your campers are! All campers who come will receive the highly coveted SILVER family night bead! We hope you can join us.

Program Highlight

On Wednesday, 7/18/18 at 1 pm, All Fired Up will be visiting the campers and giving each of them a tile to paint. Our campers are so artistic and bright, we can’t wait to see what they create! Once All Fired Up glazes and puts the finishing touches on the masterpieces, we will pick them up and return them to you in about 1-2 weeks.

This Tuesday, LITs went to Windy Hill Sports Park to play a game of putt-putt and also go go-karting! LITs meet up with other LITs from the Greater Richmond YMCAs and get to mingle with new campers and make friends. While it was a little rainy, that didn’t stop the LITs from having a great time.

Happy Fourth Week of Camp Shady Grove – our Double Dare Slime Time week full of science, some messes, and tons of exploration and fun! We’ve been enjoying seeing new and old campers have lots of fun! Please join us for our camp Talent Show, next Thursday 7/19/18. All of our huddles have been practicing various talents and routines. We hope you’ll join us, and as always we’re so glad you’re a part of our camp family this summer. As the summer is steadily moving along, please feel free to reach out to us with any comments, concerns, or questions at any point. We want to help ensure that this is the best summer ever for your campers!

Program Highlight

This week on Wednesday, a dairy farmer from The Dairy Alliance is visiting us. She is teaching us all about her life on a farm, and how to make butter. Our campers will get the hands-on experience of actually making the butter and trying it themselves! On Thursday, nurses from ECPI University will be coming and teaching us healthy habits and good hygiene with fun activities that help us learn how to properly brush our teeth, wash our hands, and MORE!

LIT Highlight

This Thursday, due to potential storms, instead of going to Pocahontas State Park, our !LITs are going to the Tuckahoe Family YMCA! While there, they will get to play a few games and watch a movie (Jumanji) with fellow LITs! We want the movie event to feel like a drive-in so LITs are welcome to bring pillows and blankets to relax with friends.

For Week 3, Ms. Halimah, our Huddle 3 counselor, earned the honor of Counselor of the Week (COW)! We would like to thank Ms. Halimah for all of her hard work and her CARING attitude!  Our camp-wide camper of the week for Week 1, is Quentin Christiansen, of the LITs. Congrats, Quinton-we appreciate your dedication to helping others!

The camp talent show is next Thursday, 7/19/18 and everyone is welcome to come watch their campers show off their talent!

Next week’s theme is live at Shady Grove. Our dress up day will be Rock Stars vs. Movie stars on Wednesday. Dress up as your favorite star!

Week 3: July 2- 6

From the Camp Director

Week 3 is underway here at Camp Shady Grove, and we are excited to celebrate Independence Day and the USA with our campers all week long. The heat kept us inside for much of Monday and Tuesday, and we will still be monitoring the temperature for the rest of the week and making sure that our kids get plenty of rest in the shade or inside, and plenty of water breaks. Lastly, we’d like to give a very special thank you to all the families that joined us last week for our first family night of the summer. We had a blast enjoying ice-cream with you all and showing off our Opening Council – we hope you all did too!

Reminders:

DON’T FORGET: Wear clothes you can get dirty next week, or a change of clothes. Our theme is Double Dare Slime Time, with a focus on science and team-building. Be prepared for things to get a little messy!

Program Highlight

This week on Tuesday, Maymont Park brought some animals for the campers to see. Campers had the chance to touch some of the reptiles and learned a little bit about them! Some things they brought were a turtle, snake skins, and turtle shells. Thank you Maymont for this AWESOME opportunity!

LIT Highlight

This Tuesday, our LITs visited Bowl of America in Short Pump. While our trip was originally planned for Patterson Sports Park for mini-golf, the intense heat changed our plans at the last minute and our LITs handled it with an awesome attitude!

Camper Ranks

This week we continued to encourage our campers and teach about our Rank Books. This allows them to work on meeting certain requirements and earning “ranks” or leveling up in areas such as nature, sports, music & drama, art, and archery. The past couple of weeks, campers in 2nd-5th grade have been working on earning ranks requirements with our specialists. Check back in with us next week to see which campers earned their first level!

Next Week Highlights

Next Wednesday, our campers will get a visit from The Dairy Alliance and a real dairy farmer and some of her animals. We are so excited to welcome this exciting community member to teach us more about farming and animals!

The LITs will be exploring Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield next Thursday and joining with all of the LITs in the YMCA of Greater Richmond to connect and explore with a Scavenger Hunt! Be on the lookout for more details regarding times.


Week 2: June 25 - 27

We are so excited to welcome everyone back for a second week of Camp Shady Grove. We’ve been enjoying the cooler weather this week, and the official kick-off of our rides-out process in the afternoon! Please join us for our family night this Thursday, June 28th for an Ice-Cream Sundae Celebration. We’ll also be holding a mock Opening Council, and you’ll be able to take a tour with your camper through our camp! We hope you’ll join us, and we’re so glad you’re a part of our camp family this summer.

This week on Thursday, groups will travel across the street to Twin Hickory Library with our nature specialist, Mr. Andrew. They will have the chance to explore nature on their walk there and then check out books when we arrive.
