Hey, Hey What Do You Say… Camp Saponi’s where we want to stay! What a summer! With Camp Saponi Summer Rewind as our theme this week, we are celebrating our last days of Summer with flashbacks of the fun we’ve already had.

This summer has been such an adventure. Meeting new friends, learning new skills, moving up in Ranks, and just loving our time at Ga-Ga. Our 1-8 Huddles got to roll right down to Chester Skate Land and have a skating good time on their field trip this week. Our LIT’s got to spend their afternoon’s at Patterson Golf park and Lazer Quest.

We want to thank you for joining us here at Camp Saponi and look forward to seeing you during the school year in our Before and After School program, and for next summer; Camp Saponi 2020!

Week 9: August 12 - 16

From the Director

Doubloon Lagoon is our theme this week, where we drenched the heat with some super watery activities. Huddles 1 through 8 got to visit Rockwood park and play on the playground and explore the nature center while our LIT Campers got to bowl the afternoon away at Bowl America and splash in Pocahontas State Park’s lake. Our Fun Friday was a wet one filled with water balloons, sprinklers, bubbles and some good ole fashion splish, splash, DUNK!.

  • We are a peanut and tree nut FREE camp. Please be mindful when packing your camper’s lunch to not have any type of peanut product in the lunch.
  • Please have your campers wear their swim suit to camp. Each group’s swim time is in the morning and this helps to ensure that they will be able to start swimming on time.

Program Highlight

Campers have been working endlessly to achieve the star ranks on the board! Art, Archery, Nature and Marksmanship are our top leaders of ranks! Campers also have been super enthusiastic at opening council competitions and closing council character chairs as well.

LIT Highlight

This week, the LITs worked on social media. They created their own social media site and presented it to the group. They talked about how social media can be a good and/or bad influence in our lives. They also discussed the impact social media has on each of us.

Week 8: August 5 - 9

Our theme this week is Hooray for Hollywood, where our campers were the STARS OF THE SHOW! Our field trip for Huddles 1 through 8 was at the Bowtie Movie Theaters and saw Aladdin or Lion King. Our LIT Campers also got to enjoy some fun at Maymont and Regal Westchester Movies. Our Fun Friday was full of Game Show activities like Minute to Win It, Jeopardy and Deal or No Deal!

Program Highlight

This week, our campers got to get a bit wet during sports time where all of the games had a water element added to them. More Campers were able to get their name on the Rank Board, completing the Red Star Rank. To move up ranks, each Camper must demonstrate their skills in multiple activities. With addition to our Red Star Rank, our White Star Rank has started to grow. During Archery, Campers could see if they could hit the targets sideways as a challenge. If they were able to hit the target, they received two Archery beads from Mr. James.

LIT Highlight

This week, Our LITs were able to work on the elements of democracy. They had a ballot where they could voice their opinions about their experience and speak in a forum similar to a city hall meeting. They worked on their 21

Week 7: July 29 - August 2

Our theme this week was Color Wars, where we explored fun games and activities as spread our colors everywhere. Our field trip for Huddles 1 through 8 was Putt Putt and Patterson Golf Park where we got to practice our mini-golf skills all over a colorful arena. Our LIT Campers also got to play Kickball Slip and Slide with our Swift Creek LITs and skate the Friday away at Chester Skateland. Our Fun Friday was full of color for a full out Color War and tie-dying!

Program Highlight

We love having a week full of excitement and color! We all dressed up as our Huddle colors and rocked the Camp Saponi stage during our parade of the rainbow. All week long we’ve been working towards our red ranks in activities like sports, archery, marksmanship, drama, creative arts and nature!

LIT Highlight

This week, the LITs worked on their computer competencies with Best Buy’s Geek Squad Academy. Hosted for our LITs across the association, They will be learning provides an opportunity for students to develop tech skills, build self-confidence, spark creativity, and discover how technology can benefit them in their educational pursuits and in future careers.  Students at Geek Squad Academy become “Junior Agents” and get hands-on experience with some of the newest and coolest technology. Local Best Buy employees help the Junior Agents explore areas like in coding, film production, photography, 3D Design, Digital Music and more!

Week 6: July 22 - 26

Costumes abound at camp!

From the Director

Our theme this week was Crowns and Capes, where we joined the quest and played with honor as our Kings and Queens of Camp Saponi were crowned on Friday at our Obstacle course. In Art we made crowns and swords to make our suit of armour for this week’s theme. Our field trip for Huddles 1 through 8 went our Powhatan Fire Station Company 2 who were amazing hometown heroes showing us their engines, suits, and safety skills. Our LIT Campers had a cool time during their field trip at the Ice Zone and Patterson Golf Park.

Program Highlight

This week we beat the heat by being flexible with the rain and heat day schedules. We spent some time indoors working on our ranks, playing games and activities in the gym and using Midlothian’s activity center to host some cool dry space for us to work together during team building activities.

LIT Highlight

LITs worked on teamwork, decision making, brain teasers, and accountability. They also worked on their communication by working together on a special handshake, answering riddles, and completing task.

Way to Go to Our Counselors of the week Miss Jordan and Mr Darrius. Week 5 was such an aamazing week we couldn’t chose just one! They always show amazing core values of the YMCA: Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility to everyone they meet.

Next Week Highlights

Week 7’s theme is Color Wars. Come explore fun games and activities including loads of color. This week is going to be messy and will need a white tee shirt to tie-dye and a white outfit for Friday’s color war!

Week 5: July 15 - 19

Nintendo Land being our theme this week, beat the heat by playing some awesome video game themed activities. Huddles 1 through 8 beat the heat by staying in our own back yard with The Game Truck. Our LIT Campers headed over to Windy Hill and Putt Putt, hitting some major mini golf!  Family night, Camp Carnival was a blast! It was so nice seeing all our Awesome Campers.

Reminders

  • Please use the Rides In and Rides Out lines. Anytime before 4:15, please feel free to pull up and get out of your vehicle for pickup. There is NO PICKUP from 4:15 – 4:30 as we gear up for Rides Out. From 4:30 – 6 p.m., we will solely be doing Rides-Out lines. We will not do indoor pickups after 4:15 p.m.
  • Please make every attempt to apply your child’s first application of sunscreen prior to their arrival at camp.

Program Highlight

On Wednesday, we had our Wacky Wednesday dress up at camp. We had lots of Marios and Luigis with a shy guy and Yoshi in there as well. All the campers and staff looked amazing.  We have had more Campers in Huddles 3 – 10 have completed their Red Star Rank in the activities; which include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. Demonstrating their skills in an activity helps them move up in Ranks. Some Campers have achieved Rank 1 and now working on Rank 2, and 3!

LIT Highlight

LITs had a great time Putt Putting this week. They worked with our Midlothian Full Time staff to help do some service projects around our facility like helping with swim lessons for our younger campers and helping with the flower beds at the pool!

Week 4: July 8 - 12

What a thrilling time we had this week with our theme Welcome to the Jungle. Huddles 1 through 8 got to explore the Metro Richmond Zoo getting to see all the animals, in the beautiful weather we have had. Our LIT Campers had a LIT Meet Up at Pocahontas State Park where they got to get together with LIT’s from other YMCA Camps! New friendship bounds are being made with our new friends that joined us this week, and what an exciting time we had ending our week with our fun Friday activity and Wednesday dress up day!

Reminders:

  • Please use the Rides In and Rides Out lines. Anytime before 4:15, please feel free to pull up and get out of your vehicle for pickup. More of our Campers in Huddles 3-10 have completed their Red Star Rank in the activities; which include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. Demonstrating their skills in an activity helps them move up in Ranks. Some Campers have achieved Rank 1 and now working on Rank 2, and 3!

LIT Highlight

LITs participated in a scavenger hunt across Pocahontas State Park, and during one of their Leadership gatherings, they talked about their failures and successes.

Week 3: July 1 - 5

This week we had wonderful holiday cheer with our theme of You’re a Firework! Huddles 1 through 8 got to go to the Maymont Park, spending time walking the beautiful scenery and petting animals! Everyone had a fun time building friendships and making new friends in the process. We ended our week strong with our fun Friday activity! Nothing cooler than a slip and slide down the hill on a Friday!

Program Highlight

Campers in Huddles 3-10 have been working hard completing their ranks in the activities that interest them. Activities include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. If a camper can demonstrate their skills in a rank they will achieve rank 1 and can be on their way to rank 2! Our heat schedule was in affect this week to keep us cool.

LIT Highlight

LITs have been stretching their minds on ways to be better communicators. We can always work on being clear, correct tone, and how to be professional communicators online as well.

Week 2: June 24 - 28

This week was out of this world with our theme Mission Impossible Super Spy Week! Huddles 1 through 8 enjoyed spending some time jumping at Launch trampoline Park, while our LITs put their laser skills to work at Lazer quest and quick escape routes at Ice Zone! Everyone had a wonderful time building their friendships and making new friends in the process. We ended our week strong with our fun Friday activity!

  • Camp Saponi will be closed on Thursday, July 4.
  • It is so helpful to have water bottles labeled with your child’s name.
  • Lost and Found will be cleared weekly and donated Wednesday morning for the previous week

Program Highlight

All Day Campers were excited to be able to jump for joy at Launch, LITs went to Lazer Quest and Ice Zone during the week. We have also been working on our secret spy skills for our family night this Thursday evening.

LIT Highlight

LITs worked on how to manage the stress they may have day to day and made stress balls.

Week 1: June 17 - 21

We are so excited to start off our summer season with Camp Saponi’s ToonTown. We had so many smiling faces, old and new, making friends and great huddle comradery. We had a super sweet cartoon dress up day on Wednesday and we beat the heat and thunderstorms bowling and our LITs went to IceZone on Friday. We had an A-W-E-S-O-M-E scavenger hunt for huddle coloured puzzle pieces for our Fun Friday!

Reminders:

  • Please label water bottles with your child’s name.
  • Please pack a morning snack every morning! It’s important for our campers to fuel up before a great day at camp with a healthy snack like an apple, nutrigrain bar, or a cereal bar. 
  • Please make every attempt to apply your child’s first application of sunscreen prior to their arrival at camp.

Program Highlight

Campers in Huddles 3-10 started working on ranking up in activities. Activities include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. If a camper can demonstrate their skills in a rank they will achieve rank 1! Many of our campers are well on their way to earning their red star rank for achieving rank 1 in 5 activities.

LITs are starting their LEADERS IN TRAINING curriculum with week working on the value of teamwork!
