Hey, Hey What Do You Say… Camp Saponi’s where we want to stay! What a summer! With Fiesta Del Sol as our theme this week, we are celebrating our last days of Summer. This summer has been such an adventure. Meeting new friends, learning new skills, moving up in Ranks, and just loving our time at Ga-Ga. All 10 of our Huddles got to roll right down to Chester Skate Land and have a skating good time on their field trip this week. It was also nice to have our Camp Families join us at the Outdoor Pool for our last Summer Camp, Family Night on Thursday. We had such a good time on Fun Friday, as we dressed to party the day away. We want to thank you for joining us here at Camp Saponi and look forward to seeing you during the school year in our Before and After School program, and for next summer …Camp Saponi 2019!

Program Highlight

Campers, got to top off their ranks in Archery and Marksmanship, as well as go Skating at Chester Skate Land. Miss Nora made flash cards with Huddle 1 during readers and talked about their ABC’s. Huddle 8 put their imaginations and nature skills together and built a Ga-Ga pit using the nature around them. We had a Fun Party Day on Friday, where we had Art, Movie, and Game time, along with Marksmanship, and Fun field games.

LIT Highlight

Our LIT’s had the opportunity to put their leadership skill into action by joining our younger huddles to help lead activities, and games. What Good Leaders we have!

COW (Counselor of the Week)

Ah’jayla Thompson was our Honor Camper for Week 9. Ah’jayla is such a sweet camper that shows all four core values of the YMCA: Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility as she goes around camp. Way to GO Ah’jayla!

Congratulations to our Week 9’s “COW’s”, Miss. Pia and Mr. Josh H! We have some SUPER GREAT staff!

Week 9: August 13 - 17

From the Director

Into the Future is our theme this week, where we explored and dreamed of what the future has in store for us. Learning about possible careers and how to best set yourself up for success in the future. Huddles 1 through 8 got to visit Avery’s Branch Farm and our LIT Campers got to skate away at the Roller Dome. Our Fun Friday was a blast into the future with all various kinds fun attire.

  • Please have your campers wear their swim suit to camp. Each group’s swim time is in the morning and this helps to ensure that they will be able to start swimming on time.

Program Highlight

Campers got a firsthand look into farming life at Avery’s Farm. It was so much fun. Campers got to bottle feed a baby calf, help gather eggs, feed some big pigs, see how a cow gets milked, and how to make butter. Campers continue demonstrating their skills in multiple activities as they work on their Ranks.

LIT Highlight

This week, the LITs worked on social media. They created their own social media site and presented it to the group. They talked about how social media can be a good and/or bad influence in our lives. They also discussed the impact social media has on each of us.

Week 8: August 6 - 10

From the Director

Our theme this week is Jurassic World, where we explored the woods and sky searching for amazing dinosaurs. Our field trip for Huddles 1 through 8 was at the Richmond Zoo where we got to see lots of cool animals. Our LIT Campers also got to enjoy some fun at Iron Bridge Sportspark. Our Fun Friday was full of scientist, dinos, and explorers!

Program Highlight

This week, our campers got to get a bit wet during sports time where all of the games had a water element added to them. On Fun Friday, we competed against other Huddles in a giant dino egg hunt. More Campers were able to get their name on the Rank Board, completing the Red Star Rank. To move up ranks, each Camper must demonstrate their skills in multiple activities. With addition to our Red Star Rank, our White Star Rank has started to grow. During Archery, Campers could see if they could hit the targets sideways as a challenge. If they were able to hit the target, they received two Archery beads from Mr. James.

LIT Highlight

This week, the LITs worked on their public speaking skills by practicing the art of debate. They split into groups and were given topics to research and argue their given side. The LITs debated fun topics such as Disney versus Nickelodeon and waffle fries versus curly fries. They also honed their STEM skills by competing to see who could build the tallest marshmallow and toothpick tower, while answering trivia questions to receive extra supplies.

Week 7: July 30 - August 3

Double Dare week at Camp Saponi

From the Director

Our theme this week was Double Dare, where we explored fun games and activities as we recreated shows from the 90s. Our field trip for Huddles 1 through 8 was at Kingpin Lanes where we got to show off our bowling abilities. Our LIT Campers also got to enjoy a stroll at Maymont Park. Our Fun Friday was full of wacky and bright 90s outfits as our campers walked across the stage showing us their funky 90s attire.

Program Highlight

This week, our campers got to get creative while working on tie-die during art time with Miss Claire. On Fun Friday, we competed against other Huddles in 90s themed trivia and challenges. The weather did not slow us down, as we continued to work on our rank booklets and had fun at specialist areas. More Campers were able to get their name on the Rank Board, completing the Red Star Rank. To move up ranks, each Camper must demonstrate their skills in multiple activities. LIT Highlight

This week, the LITs worked on self-awareness, teamwork, and creativity. They made a “Take What You Need” wall, where each LIT Camper contributed five to ten positive quotes that others can take for a motivation pick-me-up for the day. They also used their creativity to work together as a team, to make a contraption to protect an egg when dropped. Most of their eggs survived!

Week 6: July 23 - 27

Saponi campers learning military history

From the Director

Our theme this week was Game of Huddles, where we joined the quest and played with honor as our huddles compete to see who will rule Camp Saponi. In Art we got to dance around as we created an abstract art design through an interactive game. Our field trip for Huddles 1 through 8 went to the Quartermaster Museum learning about some military history. Our LIT Campers had a cool time during their field trip at the Ice Zone. Our Fun Friday was full of creative characters, as kings, queens, and little dragons walked across the stage.

Program Highlight

At Nature, campers used natural resources to work together and built a wooded castle, and on Fun Friday, we played Thrive. A massive game of capture the flag, that involves water balloons and queens!  Lots of laughs, and energy was seen by all. The rain did not keep us down, as we moved around, working on our rank booklets. Some of our Campers have completed their Red Star Rank. Demonstrating their skills in an activity helps them move up in Ranks. Our Red Star Ranks list is growing, and we had our first Camper complete the White Star Rank. During marksmanship, Campers worked on their aim, and if they hit their targets, they got to take it home.

LIT Highlight

LITs worked on teamwork, decision making, brain teasers, and accountability. They also worked on their communication by working together on a special handshake, answering riddles, and completing task.

Week 5: July 16 - 20

Camp-con being our theme this week, got campers to explore what makes you a Hero. Huddles 1 through 8 went to the Byrd Theater and watched Kung Fu Panda. Our LIT Campers headed over to Patterson Sports Park, having a ball of a time until the rain sent them back to camp.  Family night, Camp-Con Carnival was a blast! It was so nice seeing all our Awesome Campers. What an exciting time we had during Wrestle Mania for our Fun Friday activity and we got to see all the Super Hero’s on Friday, our dress up day!

Program Highlight

Thursday, we had our Camp-Con Carnival where we got to pie counselors in the face, and play some fun games. Wrestle Mania was SUPER cool! All the staff looked amazing.  We have had more Campers in Huddles 3-10 have completed their Red Star Rank in the activities; which include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. Demonstrating their skills in an activity helps them move up in Ranks. Some Campers have achieved Rank 1 and now working on Rank 2, and 3!

LIT Highlight

LITs got to create their own games and present them to their group. They are learning how to plan, lead, and implement their games. What a great job they did!

Week 4: July 9 - 13

What a sporty good time we had this week with our theme World Cup; International Champions. Huddles 1 through 8 got to play Mini Golf at Paterson Golf Park, in the beautiful weather we have had. Our LIT Campers had a LIT Meet Up where they got to get together with LIT’s from 5 other YMCA Camps! New friendship bounds are being made with our new friends that joined us this week, and what an exciting time we had ending our week with our fun Friday activity and dress up day! Campers all participated in a race around camp to complete the challenges and go for the GOLD!

More of our Campers in Huddles 3-10 have completed their Red Star Rank in the activities; which include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. Demonstrating their skills in an activity helps them move up in Ranks. Some Campers have achieved Rank 1 and now working on Rank 2, and 3!

LIT Highlight

LITs participated in a relay race, and during one of their Leadership gatherings, they talked about their failures and successes.

Week 3: July 2- 6

From the Camp Director

This week we had wonderful holiday cheer with our theme of Holiday Hoopla! Huddles 1 through 8 got to go to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, spending time out of the heat, while our LITs had yummy enjoyable time at Sweet Frog! Everyone had a fun time building friendships and making new friends in the process. We ended our week strong with our fun Friday activity and dress up day! Campers all participated in an exciting game of Counselor Hunt- Holiday Edition and dressing up as their favorite Holiday.

 Program Highlight

Campers in Huddles 3-10 have been working hard completing their ranks in the activities that interest them. Activities include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. If a camper can demonstrate their skills in a rank they will achieve rank 1 and can be on their way to rank 2! Our heat schedule was in affect this week to keep us cool.

LIT Highlight

LITs have been stretching their minds as part of our Mission Statement… spirit, mind, and body. They have played human bingo and participated in a team trivia challenge.

Week 2: June 25 - 29

This week was out of this world with our theme Galaxy Far, Far, Away! Huddles 1 through 8 enjoyed spending some time picking strawberries at Chesterfield Berry Farms, while our LITs had a ball of a time, Bowling! Everyone had a wonderful time building their friendships and making new friends in the process. We ended our week strong with our fun Friday activity and dress up day! Campers all participated in an exciting game of the Amazing Space Race and dressing up in their best Galaxy outfits.

Week 1: June 18 - 22

Week 1 theme of Camp Saponi is Into the Woods

From the Camp Director

This week was loads of fun with our theme of Into the Woods! Huddles 1 through 8 enjoyed spending some time beating the heat bowling while our LITs had a blast roller skating! Everyone had a great time getting to see old friends again and making new friends in the process. We ended our week strong with our fun Friday activity and dress up day! Campers all participated in an exciting game of Spyhunter and dressing up in their best nature outfit.

Campers in Huddles 3-10 all received their rank booklets and started working on ranking up in activities. Activities include archery, marksmanship, soccer, flag football, basketball, nature and drama. If a camper can demonstrate their skills in a rank they will achieve rank 1! Many of our campers are well on their way to earning their red star rank for achieving rank 1 in 5 activities.

LIT Highlight

LITs worked on their summer bucket list goals! They came up with fun and realistic goals to accomplish by the end of the summer.
