Week 5: July 15 - 19

Message from the Director

Superheroes and Villains OH my! We have seen are fair share of acts of kindness this week among many of our campers and their huddle groups. We are super excited to have Chesterfield County Police Department come out on Thursday and participate in a wide range of activities with us.

Lastly, as the Camp Director I want to ensure you that your child’s safety is my number one priority this summer and we are planning to bring camp inside with the heat index at its highest this week. Please continue to pack those reusable water bottles for campers to ensure they are staying hydrated even when inside for camp.

Reminders

  • Please send your camper every day with a reusable water bottle.
  • Make sure that your camper has a change of clean clothes to wear after their swim lesson to include dry under garments.
  • Camp opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.
  • We provide cold breakfast and cold lunch daily through a USDA grant we received.
  • Camp Red Hawk Art Show will be held on August 9. The childcare wing of Manchester Family YMCA will be decorated like an art museum with the camper’s art on display to be viewed by all.

Program Highlights

Our campers have improved their swimming skills tremendously over the course of the past five weeks. They love using what they have learned during free swim on Friday!

LIT Highlights

Our LIT group had their field trip at Capital One Coders and the bowling alley. “We went to Capital One Coders. We coded for five hours and played games. We also went bowling. I came in first place.” -Nyheem

Campers Ranks

The campers are flying through their art ranks! You will be able to see the art they have created for the last 5 weeks in our first family night! Our camp art show is scheduled for Thursday, July 25. Light refreshments will be provided, and we encourage the entire family to come out and check out the event. Campers can earn special family night beads for attending.

Next Week’s Highlights

  • The theme for Week 6 is Mad Science! Campers will have the opportunity to explore their inner Bill Nye the Science Guy and to create anything their imagination allows.
  • Our LIT group will be going to see a movie on Tuesday and bowling on Thursday.  *All field trips are subject to change.

Week 4: July 8 - 12

From the Camp Director

Welcome to another exciting week at Camp Red Hawk! We are having a blast with fun and fitness themed week and we are looking forward to our special guest from the Wellness team at Manchester. Don’t forget to ask your campers all about their workout they had.

Reminders

  • Rides In is 7 – 8 a.m.
  • Rides Out is 5 – 6 p.m.
  • Please pack a reusable WATER BOTTLE
  • Breakfast is served at 8 – 9 a.m. or until meals are no longer available
  • Lunch is served at noon – 1 p.m. or until meals are no longer available
  • If your camper packs a lunch remember we are a NUT FREE camp!
  • DO NOT FORGET WE CLOSE AT 6 p.m. this summer!
  • As always, we encourage all campers to participate in our daily swim lessons, we want them to come to camp in their swimsuits so we can hop right into the pool each day.
  • Don’t forget to check on your camper’s swim lesson progress using the email sent from the aquatics team!

Program Highlights

On Thursday our LIT group is going on a field trip to the Capital One Coders program to expose them to the world of technology and mobile app development. Software engineers will be helping them work through the lesson during their time.

LIT Highlights

Last week the LIT group went to Laser Quest. “We all had a good time! We all teamed up. It was kind of crazy because you couldn’t see that much, and I learned that you could shoot lasers off mirrors!” -Jaidon

Campers Ranks

Ms. Kiera is leading the campers in dance battles for our Music & Drama rank. According to our LIT counselor, Mr. Marteise, the campers show out for the battles. Campers are enjoying their time with Ms. Sydney learning how to properly play soccer, football and various other field sports.

Congratulations to our campers and counselor of the week! They are Jewels, Aaliyah, Saraia, Jermaine, Elijah, and Aryana. Our counselor of the week is Maggie from the 4th/5th grade huddle.

  • We are super excited to have our very own Chesterfield County police department to come out on Wednesday and spend time playing games with the kids and singing camp songs!
  • Will we be seeing Batman or Superman make an appearance this summer?

Week 3: July 1 - 5

Campers have fun withs songs and chants

From the Camp Director

Welcome to Week 3 at Camp Red Hawk! We have really enjoyed spending time with your campers this week. Campers really have some great camp spirit coming up with huddle chants and songs. Many of our campers are finishing RANK 1 and some have even finished RANK 2! We are super excited about all they have accomplished while here. Please remember that we are CLOSED on July 4th and I wish you a happy 4th of July.

Reminders

  • Our Week 4 theme is Fun and Fitness with a focus on Health and Wellness. We will be teaching the campers about the importance of being healthy and physically fit! Campers can come on Wednesday in fun workout gear!
  • Please have your camper dressed in their bathing suit so they are ready to go for their designated swim time.

Program Highlight

Our arts & crafts counselor, Tara, has been helping the campers with sugar art. The campers have been creating fireworks out of colorful sugar and glue. Campers have also been enjoying their time working with Ms. Keturah on their archery skills.

LIT Highlight

Our LIT’s ventured to Laser Quest for their field trip. “It was a good team building exercise because all of us got to play together. Jaidon won first place!” (Quote from Aaliyah)

Camper Ranks

We are in our third week of RANKS. Campers have been loving working towards earning their ranks and improving their skills. Many of our campers have already completed RANK 1 and RANK 2!

A big congratulations to our huddle campers for week 3: Elijah, Khyla, Kayden, Will, Jamari, and Jaidon! Our counselor of the week is Ms. Kiera from fourth/fifth huddle!

Next Week’s Highlights

Our LIT group will be going to Holiday Bowl on Tuesday and Capital One Coders on Thursday from 9 till 4. LIT’s need to bring their own nut-free lunch on Thursday for their field trip.

Week 2: June 24 - 28

Camp has really started to pick up and campers are working towards completing their first RANKS in areas like outdoor education, music and drama, arts and crafts, archery, and even sports. We can not wait to show case those who have earned RANKS on Friday during closing counsel.

Reminders

Next week is Red, White, and Blue themed week. Encourage your campers to dress up on Wednesday to earn a spirit bead from their camp counselors! Also do not forget that we are closed on July 4th!

Please do not forget campers should come to camp in their bathing suits with reusable water bottles. We also have the convenience of rides in/out for our parents each day between the hours of 7 – 8 a.m. and 5 – 6 p.m.

Program Highlight

Campers are doing well in their swim lessons; we have noticed campers gaining confidence in the water and we are so proud of them.

LIT Highlight

Our LIT group went to Chester Skateland on Tuesday and according to most of them they fell but eventually got their wheels on the ground and had a blast!

Camper Ranks

Campers are really enjoying the two days of RANKS during the week. We are super excited several of our campers have completed RANK 1 and will receive their certificate of completion and bead during Friday’s closing counsel.

Week 1: June 17 - 21

Our campers have had a great week at camp, we have filled their days with lots of activities, camp songs, and reconnecting old friends and new friends. We are in full swing of swim lessons, archery, and lots of GAGA!
We hope your campers are sharing lots of great stories with you and we can not wait to have them back for week 2.

Reminders:

  • Send your camper in their swim suit each morning to get them in the pool faster to enjoy their 30 minutes of swim lessons.
  • Also don’t forget the reusable water bottles!

Program Highlight

We have really enjoyed having your campers try their hand at soccer with Ms. Sydney and even start their safety training with Ms. Keturah. Swim lessons are in full swing and are campers seem to really enjoy themselves at the pool.

LIT Highlight

The LIT program traveled this week to Putt-Putt mini golf and Maymont Park. The students seem to be enjoying themselves when they meet up with other teens from across the YMCA of Greater Richmond.

Camper Ranks

Campers started ranks this week, and have already accomplished so much! We will recognize those who have accomplished Rank 1 during Friday closing council.

Our leadership staff looks for campers who demonstrate the four core values of the YMCA, respect, caring, responsibility and honesty and we are super excited to announce our camper of the week during Friday’s opening counsel and we know everyone will be super excited!
Counselor of the Week recognizes the staff members who demonstrates outstanding leadership skills and enthusiasm through their groups and hypes their campers up all day long. Our counselor of the week will be announced on Friday during opening council!

Next Week Highlights

  • Our campers will continue working on earning their ranks next week and continue their swim lessons.
  • Our L.I.T program will be traveling to Chester Skateland Tuesday and a volunteer opportunity at our Power Scholars summer program on Thursday!
