Hello Camp Families! Can you believe it, we are already in Week 8 of Camp. Have you thought about plans for before and after school care? Registration has begun for YMCA Before and After School Care. Check out our website for more details on exact location, program timing, rates, and what we offer. The fun doesn’t stop at Camp!

Reminders:

  • Join us this Thursday, August 9 for Game Night from 5 – 6:30 pm
  • Make sure to bring a peanut free lunch and snack daily
  • Campers will need a swim suit and towel everyday
  • Please make sure campers keep toys at home
  • Sneakers are recommended to be worn

Program Highlight

With the beautiful weather this week, we have been able to take advantage of the outdoors! Wednesday we went to Maymont and campers had a fantastic time enjoying the gardens, hiking, and learning about all the animals that call Maymont home.

LIT Highlight

At the beginning of this week, LITs helped deliver fruit within the facility and also assisted in prepping it for an activity later this week.

Hello Camp Families! We’ve had another rainy week but that hasn’t stopped our fun this week. See below some of the highlights from this week.

Reminders:

  • During inclement weather we do not offer rides in/out. Please refer to CampSpace during rainy days.
  • We do not offer rides in on Mondays and rides out on Fridays.
  • Please don’t forget to pack a completely nut-free morning snack and lunch.  Bring a labeled water bottle every day.  Wear closed toe sneakers.

Program Highlight

Campers had an awesome time at ARC park this week. ARC park is a park where they partner with the community to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

LIT Highlight

This week LITs focused on self-expression. Activities were based on self-awareness, freedom of thought and understanding, teamwork and creativity.

Congratulations to all of our campers who completed ranks on Friday. Our campers have been working hard towards their creative art, paddle sports, and soccer ranks this week.

Hello Camp families! Although we had some yucky weather this week, campers had a great time playing minute to win games with their campers and counselors, everyone made yummy Finding Dory marshmallow pops, and we also showed off our moves during our dancing competition.

Program Highlight

Wednesday, July 25th we had Reptile Adventure put on a fun and educational show for our campers. Campers were able to pet and learn more about different reptiles such as an Iguana, Boa, Lizard and more.

LIT Highlight

This week our LITs worked on Teamwork by working on activities that focused on listening skills, patience, strategy and communication, leadership, accountability, respect, and decision making.

Week 3: July 2- 6

From your director:

Hello Camp families! Thank you to all our parents and campers who came out to our first family night: The Secret Life of Campers. Families “traveled” to Japan to make Candy Sushi and paper lanterns. We also traveled to Nigeria to Explore Nigerian Adire and created our own. We cannot wait to see what’s to come for more family nights in the future.

  • This Friday July 6th, we will celebrate Halloween. Campers should come dressed in their favorite Halloween Costume.

Program Highlight

Camp Monacan would like to give a huge “SHOUT OUT” to our Aquatics Team. They have been putting in a lot of hard work teaching our campers how to swim. We asked a camper what was his favorite part of the day and his response was swim lessons. THANK YOU so much for all that you do!

LIT highlight

Our LITs have been doing an amazing job as they work on their LIT curriculum. This week focus was Patriotism. LITs were about to create their own Patriot BINGO. First, they learned what a patriot is and then discussed/shared words that describe a patriot. Once this was completed, LITs were able to randomly fill in the words on their blank BINGO card and attempt to be the first to call BINGO.

Next week’s theme is Carnival Craziness. Come one, come all for a fun filled week of carnival activities leading up to our BEST DAY EVER! Our Carnival is held on Thursday, July 12th from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Children will have the opportunity to make new friends and even a chance to dunk their favorite counselor! We can’t wait to see you there!

Week 2: June 25 - 29

Camper makes a silly craft

Hello Camp Families! This week has been full of fun and learning as we “travel” to different countries. So far we’ve traveled to Nigeria and learned about the habitats and the different herbivorous who live in the savanna grasslands. We also created djembe drums and African mask as these are used to mark special occasions like religious ceremonies, rituals, harvest celebrations and more. The rest of the week we will travel to China, Spain, and India.

  • We have our first family night of the summer this Thursday June 28th from 5 -7 pm.  Join us to learn more about The Secret Life of a Camper!

Program Highlight

Daily we teach our campers the mission of the YMCA and our four core values which are caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty. During our closing assembly, we recognize our campers who show these four core values throughout the day by allowing them to have front row seating in our character chairs during opening and closing assembly.

LIT Highlight

This week our LITs focused on stress management. Our LIT activities were based on conflict resolution, perseverance, camp memories, creativity and public speaking.

Camper Ranks

Campers had the opportunity to participate in choice programming this week at Camp Monacan! While at their first choice activity, campers worked on the YMCA of Greater Richmond rank booklets to improve skills and advance to their next rank level! Everyone had a blast while learning new skills in their favorite activity area.

Week 1: June 18 - 22

Hello Camp Families! Happy first week of camp! This week has been a ton of fun with our Survivor Week theme. Campers are building relationships and long-lasting memories with one another. It’s always great to see smiles on their faces when campers see old friends and smiles on their faces while they are making new friends. Campers had the opportunity to show off their bowling skills at AMF Sunset lanes. Campers also had the opportunity to work on their archery skills, teambuilding, creative arts, and music and drama. They even showed us their cooking skills by making s’mores. Campers enjoyed themselves as they went on a survivor scavenger hunt around the branch to find survive related items. Parents, please remember to turn in all paperwork required if we have not received them yet. We have so much more fun things planned for the summer and we can’t wait for your camper to experience the BEST SUMMER EVER!

This week our campers in huddles 2 through 4 and LITs worked on creating t-shirt bags for the homeless. A huge thank you to Eva and her mother for allowing us the opportunity to participate in this project.

LIT Highlight

This week our LITs focused on goal setting, teamwork, and inclusion by working on their summer bucket list. Our LITs came up with fun and realistic goals to accomplish this summer.
