Week 8: August 6 - 10

The sun is back and we are enjoying it. Campers are working hard in swim lessons and have been having fun doing so many water activities.

Reminders

Please ensure that your camper is coming to camp with sunscreen applied. We will apply additional sunscreen after swimming. Also, please have your campers wear closed toed shoes. We play several sports that involve running and kicking which is a lot easier with tennis shoes than flip flops. Also, please remember to pick up your child from the Powhatan YMCA on Wednesday August 8.

Program Highlight

Tuesday and Wednesday were water days. We have played slip and slide kickball, duck duck splash and many other great games. What better way to beat the heat.

LIT Highlight

LIT campers will be traveling to Ironbridge Sports Park on Thursday, August, 9.  They will leave at 10 a.m. and return by 3:30 p.m.  They will be participating in laser tag, go karts, and mini golf.  Please ensure your LITs are wearing closed toed shoes.

Campers are continuously working towards earning their ranks and they are given the option to choose which ranks they would like to work on each day between 4:30 – 6 p.m.

Next Week’s Highlights

Next week’s theme is Splish Splash Week. Please join us on Wednesday night from 6:30 – 7:45 p.m. for Family Night.  We will be grilling hot dogs and swimming at the Powhatan YMCA.  We hope to see you there. Also we will be holding camp at the Powhatan YMCA on August 16 and 17. Pick up and drop off will be at the YMCA on these days.

Week 7: July 30 - August 3

Campers enjoy snack time at camp

It has been a rainy week here at Camp Arrowhead, but that has stopped us from having a good time. The campers have succeeded in swim lessons and are getting better when practicing at archery.

Reminders

Please ensure that your camper is coming to camp with sunscreen applied. We will apply additional sunscreen after swimming. Also, please have your campers wear closed toed shoes. We play several sports that involve running and kicking which is a lot easier with tennis shoes than flip flops.

Program Highlight

Although we have been cooped up inside, we continue to do arts and crafts, sports and several other activities. 5 of our campers also partipated in opening a board meeting in the courthouse area on Monday. They sang a camp song and led the group in a prayer.

LIT Highlight

LIT campers will be traveling to Maymont park this Thursday from 12:30-3. Please be sure that campers are wearing closed toed shoes.

Week 5: July 16 - 20

All of our campers were looking forward to our Talent Show but unfortunately due to some modifications to the school in which we reside, we were not able to hold it. It has been reschedule to next Wednesday, July 25th from 5:30-7pm. Please join us, even if your child is not attending camp next week.

Program Highlight

Tuesday was water day. The campers had a great time playing slip and slide kickball. It was a hot day, and what better way to cool off then with some water. We had water relays and even used our toes to gather treasure of the bottom of the pool.

LIT Highlight

LITs will travel to the Windy Hill Sports Park to participate in some fun Put-Put and go-karting this Thursday. Please ensure that your LITs are wearing tennis shoes and that they bring a water bottle.

Next Week’s Highlights

Next week’s theme is Super Hero Academy. We will learn how to be the best we can be. Not only make believe but also the Heroes of our everyday lives. Dress up as your favorite superhero on Wednesday. We will be going to Fighting Creek Park on Tuesday to do another program with the master gardeners. We will leave the school earlier than normal on this day. We will depart at 8:45.  If you will be dropping of later, please meet us at the park.

Week 4: July 9 - 13

From the Camp Director

Campers enjoyed the company of a local dairy farmer, Coley Jones, as they learned about the daily life of living on a farm and raising cows for milk. She also did an activity with them and helped them make butter. All of the campers really enjoyed shaking the jar and trying some homemade butter on some crackers. Campers are also working hard during swim lessons and learning new skills. Please log into www.playerspace.net in order to see their progress. Evaluations will be imputed on Thursday and Friday of each week.

Reminders:

Campers will be going to the Powhatan Library for an interactive movie activity. Staff at the library have built a great program for our children to attend this Wednesday from 1-3pm. We will arrive back at the school a little later than usual. Also remember that free swim is every Friday from 10-11am so please have your campers come with sunscreen already applied.

Program Highlight

We do our best to minimize the summer learning gap in our program. This is why we will go to the library to do educational activities and have outside activities come to us to help us learn. We also have 30 minutes of reading time each day which allows campers to continue their reading progress throughout the summer.

LIT Highlight

LITs will travel to the Midlothian YMCA on Thursday for some fun and energetic time with other LITs from the association. We will leave from the Powhatan YMCA around 12:00pm and return around 3:30pm.

Next Week Highlights

Next week’s theme is “Express Yourself”. Campers will get the opportunity to create works of art that can be shared with their families on Family Night. Family Night will be on Wednesday, July 18th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Come join us as we showcase all of the artwork that we have created this summer so far. We will also hold a talent show. The show will begin at 6:15 pm. If your child would like to participate, please have them sign up with us and we will add them to the show schedule. We will hold some rehearsals during camp, but please help your child prepare between now and then.

Week 2: June 25 - 27

We have enjoyed some great activities this week. All campers are working towards their ranks and having fun learning new games and making new friends within their camp huddles.

Reminders:

We will be leaving to go to Fighting Creek park at 8:45 am on Thursday morning. This is earlier than normal so please drop off your children before 8:45 am. If you are dropping of later, please meet us at Fighting Creek Park. LITs will be traveling to Ashland Skateland on Thursday. They will leave at 12:30pm and return at 3:30pm.

Program Highlight

Campers learned about worm composting with the Powhatan/Goochland Master Gardeners on Tuesday and will do another nature program on Thursday with them as well.

LIT Highlight

Our LIT group played a few holes of Frisbee golf this week. They learned how to play and cheered each other on as they made the Frisbees into the nets.
