HippogatorHippogator Xing Sign

It all began one dark and stormy summer night...well, actually, we don't know exactly how or when it began.  But, through some mysterious turn of events, this half-hippopotamus, half-alligator creature emerged as the official lake monster at Camp Thunderbird.  The Hippogator has been around about as long as camp itself, keeping watch over the murky waters of Lake George.

Really more of a camp 'pet' than 'monster', the Hippogator typically stays out of sight during the daytime.  But just in case, campers beware--the Hippogator is allergic to life jackets--so to ensure your safety, always keep your life jacket securely buckled while canoeing on Lake George!

Hippogator Oar SignWe don't have any proof of documented Hippogator sightings, but past campers will tell you stories of close encounters!  Campers report having the bottom of their canoes bumped by the Hippogator, and they've reported seeing glowing eyeballs on the lake during overnight campouts, and hearing late night splashing in the water.

When you're at camp, keep an eye out for Hippogator footprints by the lake, and watch for bubbles in the water...

Cowabunga

There have been many close calls, but the largest fish to ever live in Lake George has only been captured and photographed once, back in 2004.

Every camper has his or her own opinion of the best bait to use to lure Cowabunga, and any given summer day you will see dozens of campers on the fishing dock waiting for the 'big one'.  And big he is...just look at these photos!Cowabunga - Hooked

Cowabunga - On LandCowabunga - Release

Don't worry...we released him soon after taking these pictures.  So, he's still out there.

Maybe you'll be the next to catch him!
