The Y is for Healthy Living

The Y supports thousands of youth, adults, and families by providing guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, and body.

Y Guides & Y Princesses

The Y-Guides, Y-Princesses and Y-Papoose programs are unique opportunities for fathers to spend uninterrupted time with their children. The purpose of the programs is to strengthen families. Fathers, sons and daughters participate in fun and educational activities that help them grow closer together. Activities range from camping, canoeing, archery, crafts, and games to special events and outings organized by the Y.

WHAT IS Y-GUIDES?
The Y-Guides program was founded in 1926 as a means to engage fathers in the raising of their sons. Since that time, the program has evolved and changed in many ways, but the key concepts remain - strengthening the family. We want parents to "get to know their kid while their kid is still a kid."

The Shady Grove Family YMCA offers 3 variations of this program:

  • Y-Guides - dads and their sons, ages 5 - 10
  • Y-Princesses - dads and their daughters, ages 5 - 10
  • Y-Papooses - dads and their 3 - 5 year old children, (sons or daughters)

Participants are arranged into groups called tribes, who meet once or twice per month. Where, when and how often are all decided by the group members in advance. Most people remain with their tribe throughout their involvement in the Y-Guides program, and create lifelong friends between the kids and the dads.
